Activity information

As Scouts, we’re part of a global movement, sharing not only an adventurous spirit but also a responsibility to care for our planet. Climate change and global warming are not just phrases we hear about, but they’re real challenges that affect all of us, from Switzerland’s melting glaciers to rising sea levels across the world. But as Scouts, we also have the power to make a difference, no matter where we are.

What’s Happening to Our Planet?

The world’s climate is changing quickly, and human actions like burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests, and creating waste are causing temperatures to rise. The longer we wait to take action, the harder it will be to protect our planet. That’s why sustainability—using resources in ways that don’t harm the environment—is essential. Together, we can choose actions that help reduce our impact on the earth and protect our future.

How Scouts can lead the way

As Scouts, we already value nature and adventure. Every time we explore forests, camp under the stars, or hike mountain trails, we’re reminded of how beautiful and important our planet is. But caring for nature doesn’t just mean enjoying it; it means taking responsibility to protect it.

Here are a few simple ways Scouts can make a big impact:

  • Practice “Leave No Trace”: Every Scout should know the Leave No Trace principles. This means cleaning up after ourselves, sticking to marked trails, and respecting wildlife. By following these principles, we make sure that nature stays clean and healthy for everyone.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Waste is one of the biggest problems causing pollution. Scouts can reduce waste by using reusable containers, repairing things instead of throwing them away, and recycling. Even small changes, like bringing a water bottle instead of buying plastic ones, make a difference.
  • Save Energy: When we use less energy, we reduce our impact on the planet. Turning off lights, choosing renewable energy sources, and using energy-efficient devices are all ways to save energy. Scouts can make these choices not only at home but also during events and camps.
  • Spread Awareness: Talk about climate action with your Scout group and your community. The more people who know about climate change, the stronger our impact can be. Start conversations, create awareness events, or join global movements like Earth Hour.
  • Choose Sustainable Transport: Walking, cycling, or using public transport can help reduce pollution. Next time you’re planning a hike or camp, consider carpooling or using eco-friendly travel options.

Ready to take action? Here you have more activities to practice:

  • Organise waste recycling bins with good signage & posters of what goes into each
  • Start a battery recycling campaign
  • Make a nature trail or nature info sheets/panels for your area or an area used by your group for activities.
  • Put up a sign of how long it takes waste to biodegrade to spread awareness
  • Make Bird and Bat boxes
  • Make Hedgehog hibernation boxes and Insect hotels
  • Construct a small pond for amphibians
  • Plant a wildflowers meadow or window boxes for pollinator bees & butterflies to increase biodiversity
  • Plant a small herb garden or make a raised bed to grow vegetables

Let’s make every action count! Choose one activity and upload o photo of what you did!

Practicing “Leave no trace”! Even though our scout group is small consisting of just 3 people, we’re doing our part to help the environment. We managed to cover 112m of the beach in 2 hours collecting 8 bags of rubbish. We as humans should do better and properly dispose of our waste so it doesn’t end up on beaches or in oceans.

"I would most like to try making bird or bat boxes, or making a small pond for amphibians. I’d love to do something that helps the animals in an environment and assist in the thriving of an ecosystem. Reducing the chance that species go endangered or extinct is an important step for our future so our children can enjoy the amazing biodiversity of our earth. "

This activity highlights the importance of taking action to protect our planet. As Scouts, we have a responsibility to lead the way in sustainability by making mindful choices. Through practices such as reducing waste, recycling, saving energy, and spreading awareness, we can make a significant difference in reducing our impact on the environment. It encourages us to engage in simple yet powerful actions that promote a cleaner and healthier planet for everyone.

"Reflection: Through this activity, I have learned the importance of small actions that can lead to big changes for our planet. It made me realize that every Scout has the power to make a positive impact, whether it's by reducing waste, conserving energy, or protecting wildlife. I am now more conscious of my actions and their effect on the environment. By practicing sustainable habits and spreading awareness, I believe we can all contribute to preserving the beauty of nature for future generations."

In spring last year we built with our "beavers" bat-boxes. The kids leard to use a saw, screwdriver and so on and learned through games about the life of bats. The finishes boxes were set up on trees around our scout-center. In summer we could watch the bats flying around hunting insectsin the evening.

"Building something for a living creature had a deep impact on the kinds - they became more aware of the animal and its life, because they had self taken action and come very close to it. Even after some month they remembered the activity and liked watching the bats flying around. "

In our Pramuka Charmed, we focused to minimize waste in any form. The most portion in an activity is food! This time we use reusable cutleries by buffet lunch. After that, we separate the organic waste to be feed into BSF maggot the campsite have. To organize the action, we have the dedicated division, it is less waste division. They have job to make sure the 3R movement runs well along the activities.

"Buying foods or any beverages by our own cutleries so we reduce the one time use cutleries usage, it is the simplest yet cheap effort that everyone should be able to do!"
